Episode 9: Tommy Chong

Episode Summary

Tommy Chong has defined the stoner ethos across multiple generations, whether is was Cheech and Chong in the 70’s, his character Leo in the 90’s, or anyone of the many projects he is involved with today. While that stereotype fits his characters, the stereotype doesn’t characterize his hard and continuous work. Tommy Chong has worn many hats in his long career. He’s had the chance to rub elbows with Hollywood elite, share an elevator with Mohamed Ali, and was partially responsible for discovering the Jackson Five. But where his personal story begins, might come as a surprise. Tommy Chong came from humble beginnings, beginnings that instilled a valuable work ethic.

Tommy Chong has been a lifelong artist. He’s a Musician, an Improv comic, a writer, a movie star, and much more, it is hard to pin Tommy down, he’s an original. Tommy had started an underage music club in his teens and ran a strip club as a young adult. From there are the tales of working for Motown, meeting Mohamed Ali, discovering the Jackson 5, and all of this is before his award winning comedy records with Cheech. This is all prior to "Up In Smoke" being created. Tommy walks us through his legendary career from teen musician to professional actor, writer, and director.
